What a Scare, Jesse Bear
Published in School & Library Binding by Simon & Schuster (Juv) (September, 1999)
Authors: Nancy White Carlstrom, Bruce Degen, and Nancy White-Carlstrom
Average review score:

Halloween is a wonderful and terrible thing when you're 2.
The best Halloween book for little ones out there! Carlstrom does a fantastic job of capturing the excitement, delight, and apprehension that Halloween brings to small people. Jesse, Papa and Grandma visit the pumpkin patch and carve a pumpkin, which is great fun. But turn out the lights and light the jack o'lantern, and it's a little bit scary. For his costume, Jesse finds the perfect mask -- then scares himself silly when he puts it on and looks in the mirror. Trick or treating sounds good in theory, but where did all these other spooky folks come from? If you have a little person who's both delighted and terrified by Halloween, this is the perfect book for you. If not, buy it just for the rollicking rhyme and gorgeous illustrations. A must-have for all toddler households.

What Are Friends For?
Published in Hardcover by Kingfisher Books (April, 1998)
Author: Sally Grindley
Average review score:

Delightful!
My children and I love this story! It is refreshing to find a tale of friendship that touches on sharing and helping, but also on differing opinions and hurt feelings. The story weaves nicely through all of these aspects of friendship and still manages to end happily. The illustrations convey all of the emotions of the two sweet characters most effectively. This delightful story easily led to conversation with my preschoolers on the value of true friends.

What Is Bear Waiting For? (Pop-Up Pals)

Our son is OBSESSED
Our 8-month-old son can't get enough of this book! A friend of ours sent it to him for Christmas and he LOVES it. All we have to do is pick it up and start reading and he comes crawling at the speed of light screaming to be on our lap. I normally don't like books with gimics ( The books is actually a sort of jack in the box with a stuffed animal bear that "pops out of his den") but this one is very sweet and cuddly and my son can't get enough!

What's It Like to Be a Baby Polar Bear? (What's It Like to Be)
Published in Paperback by Chrysalis Books (01 April, 1999)
Authors: Honor Head and Graham Rosewarne
Average review score:

Wonderful Illustration
The illustrations in the "What it's like to be a baby...." series is absolutely wonderful. The artworks made me smile. Mr Nicholas has a true talent for bringing out the essence of the animals he brings to life with a paintbrush.

What's the Matter with Carruthers?
Published in School & Library Binding by Houghton Mifflin Co (06 September, 1972)
Author: James Marshall
Average review score:

Poor Carruthers
Poor Carruthers. He's ready to hibernate, only he doesn't know it. And poor Emily and Eugene, his friends, who try everything to cheer him up to no avail. This is one of Marshall's quieter books, but no less effective. Plot, illustrations, details are all there.

Whoosh! Up The Chimney And Past The Stars
This is a great book. This was the first ever book I ever read. It tells the story of a teddy bear, who decides to go on a quest to the moon, in a box (and all before bathtime!) It uses an imaginative (yet simple) vocabulary, the pictures are fantastic, the text is big enough to be seen by young eyes, and the adventure described in the book is thrilling. This is THE ideal bedtime story for your young kids. They'll read it again and again. I guess this book appeals to me so much because it was given to me by my (late) Grandmother, when I was only two. it was my first book. Buy loads of copies of this book and give them to all the kids that you know: they will keep it forever, and never get a better gift. A treasure.

When a Bear Bakes a Cake

"A Great Bear Book"
This is a great book. There are wonderful rhymes. The drawings are detailed and fun; you can find faces on mountains and in water. There is a frog which hides on every page; looking for the frog and the different things makes this book even better.

The book is fun and happy. It is a terrific bedtime story. Our copy is worn from use and love. This book should be as mandatory children's reading as "Good Night Moon" and "Winnie the Pooh".
